The idea for the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES came about in 2005.
As most enthusiastic Fantasy Sports Fans, we were participating in
a number of different leagues. With several league champions all claiming
BRAGGING RIGHTS, we began to debate who really was THE BEST. League
Champions would point out factors of how they dominated their league, the
quality of Team Owners in each league, and obstacles they had to
overcome throughout the Fantasy Season.
In 2006, we decided to rate each team from all of our leagues into one,
common rating system. The rating system had to be fair to all leagues,
regardless of league size, roster size, and scoring rules.
After extensive discussions, we came up with a list of key factors for grading a Fantasy Team. Using these factors, an algorithm was developed to rank each team and...The exclusive NCS Computer Rating System was born.
After discussing the way Champions are crowned in major sports, we decided against having the computer ratings alone decide the overall champion. After further discussions, we decided to go with a structure similar to the NCAA Basketball "March Madness" Tournament. The top rated teams would compete in a head-to-head tournament, with teams being seeded based on their rating in the final rankings (top rated team plays the lowest rated team in the tourney and so on). Since most Fantasy NASCAR leagues use a points only system rather than H2H, we decided to hold an end of season Championship Chase, similar to the NASCAR Chase for the Cup.
In February 2006, with the beginning of the '06 Fantasy NASCAR Season, 40 teams from 3 leagues were
ranked each week. Although we still had 3 league champions, we were able to
declare ONE TRUE OVERALL CHAMPION, by inviting the top 12 rated teams to compete in our overall Championship Chase for the final 10 races. We continued with the ranking system during the 2006 Fantasy Football and 2006 - '07 Fantasy Basketball Seasons.
Again, we ranked 40 teams from 3 leagues in each sport. Towards the end of the NFL and NBA Season, we invited the top 16 teams to play in a the head-2-head, single elimination overall Championship Tournament. Again, there was no debating the ONE TRUE OVERALL CHAMPION for each sport.
In 2007, we decided that we probably weren't the only Fantasy Fans interested
in finding out who really is THE BEST. We partnered up with FantasySportsUnion.com and extended the challenge to all leagues from around the
world to participate. Remember, we're HUGE Fantasy Sports Fans just like
you, but we don't have a ton of financial backing. Without a lot of money to advertise, spreading the word about the SERIES
was done mostly by word of mouth. The response from the Fantasy Sports
Community was overwhelming and the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES was born.
In 2008, we continued our partnership with FantasySportsUnion.com and introduced a $500 grand prize for the National Champion of each sport. We also created NationalChampionshipSeries.com, a site geared only to Fantasy Sports Fans and the National Championship Series. This gave us a place to post weekly rankings for all participants to view easily.
In 2009, we launched a new Members Area for the National Championship Series. Members can now interact with each other, send messages, created and participate in live chatrooms, and view their active teams in one convenient place.
